
Getting the Most Out of Your Heat for CNT Growth
Growing carbon nanotubes is all about one thing: getting a massive amount of thermal energy exactly where it needs to be—right on the wafer surface. Most setups waste a ton of power just heating up the oven walls. That’s a headache. To fix this, we use gold-coated reflectors. It sounds fancy, but the goal is simple: stop wasting energy and start focusing it.
Why the Gold Matters
Think about a standard quartz lamp. It throws heat in every direction. In a typical CNT setup, you’re basically throwing half your energy away the second you flip the switch. We use high-purity gold because it reflects over 98% of infrared light. It basically turns your heater into a focused beam. By tightening that focal point, you get a much stronger heat flux on the wafer without having to crank up the total wattage.You get more heat exactly where it matters.
Balancing Power and Heat
Here is the tricky part. You want high-wattage configurations so you can ramp up the heat quickly—which is a must for certain synthesis cycles. But that much concentrated energy creates a brutal thermal load. If you go with a high-density array, you have to make sure your chassis cooling can actually handle the leftover heat. If it can’t, you’re looking at warped mounting brackets or fried control electronics. It’s a balancing act.
Real-World Setup
We built these units to slide right into existing CVD chambers. But there’s a catch: those gold surfaces are incredibly sensitive. If a bit of oil or dust gets on the reflector, it’ll burn in during the first few runs. This creates “dark spots” that mess up your wafer uniformity. A few tips for when you install: Keep it in a clean room. Be obsessive about the alignment. Even a couple of millimeters off can shift the focal point, and suddenly you’ve got uneven growth across your wafer.Precision is everything here.
