
Keeping Your Bathroom Mirror Heaters Safe (And Dry)
Putting infrared heating lamps behind a bathroom mirror sounds like a luxury, but it’s basically putting electronics in a steam room. Humidity and condensation are the enemies here. If you don’t get the insulation right, you’re looking at current leaks, which is the last thing you want when you’re standing in a wet shower. Here is how we actually handle the electrical side of things to keep everything safe. Stopping the leaks Standard quartz tubes just can’t hack it when the room is constantly foggy. We use special dielectric coatings and seals on the end-caps to keep moisture from sneaking into the filament chamber. Think about it: if water hits a live terminal, you’ve got a short circuit. To stop that, we pot the connectors in high-grade silicone or epoxy. It basically wraps the wire-to-lamp connection in a waterproof blanket. Dealing with “stray” electricity In a wet room, the metal frame needs to be grounded. Period. We run a dedicated earth wire straight to the heater’s housing. Why? Because if there is any stray current, we want it to trip the GFCI breaker instantly. It’s much better to have the power click off than to have the mirror frame become electrified. We test every unit to make sure the leakage current stays tiny—well under 0.75mA—even when the air is totally saturated with steam. The “breathing” problem Heat makes things expand. Cold makes them shrink. In a bathroom, your heater is constantly “breathing” as it cycles on and off. Over time, that movement can actually pull seals open, inviting moisture inside. To fight this, we use flexible, high-temp cabling. It doesn’t crack or get brittle after a few hundred cycles, so the seal stays tight. One last thing… While the electrical stuff is covered, don’t forget about the glue. Infrared lamps get hot. Really hot. If you use cheap adhesives to mount your mirror, that heat will melt them. You’ll end up with a lamp that shifts out of place, creating a dangerous hotspot on the glass. Stick with heat-resistant silicone or, better yet, use mechanical clips to hold everything steady.
