
Keeping Your Bathroom Infrared Heaters Safe and Dry
Putting infrared lamps in a bathroom is a bit of a battle. You’ve got constant steam and moisture floating around, and when that vapor hits a scorching hot heating element? That’s a recipe for short circuits or nasty leaks. To stop that from happening, we focus on the two spots where things usually go wrong: the junction points and the housing seals.
Dealing with the damp
You can’t just use standard wiring here. It won’t hold up. We stick with double-insulated cables and use high-temperature silicone seals right where the wires enter the unit. The goal is simple: keep the steam out of the terminal block. If moisture sneaks in, your insulation resistance tanks, and your RCD will trip before you can even blink. We also make sure the housings are made of stuff that doesn’t rust. Aluminum or treated stainless steel works best. It stops the chassis from pitting, which keeps your grounding path solid and reliable.
The weak links
Here’s the thing: the connection between the lamp and the power supply is usually where the failure starts. To fix this, we use sealed ceramic holders or specific gaskets to block water from getting in. This stops “tracking.” That’s when a tiny film of moisture creates a bridge for electricity to travel across an insulator. Not something you want in a shower. And please, don’t use cheap PVC wiring. It’ll get brittle and crack after a few heat cycles, leaving a wide-open door for humidity to crawl inside. You need wiring that can take the heat without losing its airtight seal.
The balancing act
Now, you might think “let’s just seal it airtight!” But there’s a catch. If you seal the unit too tight, the heat gets trapped inside. Your components will overheat, and your lamp’s lifespan will plummet. It’s a trade-off. You have to find that sweet spot—an IP rating that keeps liquid water away from live terminals but still has a thermal vent to let the unit breathe. And just for peace of mind? Always wire it up with a dedicated GFCI circuit. It’s the best way to handle any surprises.
