Dealing with the Damp
When we say IP65, it just means the unit is tight enough to keep out dust and can handle water jets hitting it from pretty much any angle. We do this with high-grade silicone gaskets and sealed cable entries. Here is the thing about “fog.” It’s not just mist; it’s actually millions of tiny water droplets. If those sneak inside the chassis, they land right on the quartz tube or the electrical terminals. That’s when you get shorts or the filament just gives up. By sealing the housing tight, we keep the guts of the machine dry and happy.
Choosing Materials That Actually Last
We went with shortwave infrared. Why? Because it heats you and your furniture, not the air. If you try to heat the open air in a backyard, you’re just wasting electricity. To get that heat moving, we use polished aluminum reflectors to throw the warmth exactly where you need it. And since rain is inevitable, the exterior is powder-coated steel. It stops the rust before it even starts. One quick tip:**keep those quartz tubes clean.**If dust or bugs get baked onto the glass, they create “hot spots.” Over time, that stress makes the glass crack. A quick wipe-down saves you a lot of headache.
A Few Things to Watch Out For
Now, these units are tough, but they aren’t submarines. Don’t install them where water can pool around the base. Plus, there’s a trade-off with that tight IP65 sealing—it traps heat inside the driver compartment. You’ve got to give the rear heat sink some breathing room. If you mount it flush against an insulated wall with no gap, the unit will get too hot and trip the thermal cutoff. Give it some space to breathe, and it’ll run all night.
